MONSTER MASHERS: Winners Announced
FreeGraphics.com, Xara Ltd., and Zy.com just gave away over $800 worth
of prizes. The Monster Masher Halloween Contest finished up last week
and I pleased to announce we have three marvelous winners. First prize
went to Absinthe - visit Absinth's site (it's a lot of fun) at
http://www.absinth.com/ or pop by
http://www.freegraphics.com/contest-mm-winners.html and see a list of
the winners and their winning images.
My undying gratitude goes to the good Dr. Nimbus,
http://members.tripod.com/~DrNimbus/ , for his wonderful font which was
the inspiration for the contest; the marvelous judges; and Xara Ltd.
and Zy.com for offering such great prizes.
ACE OF SPACE: The Web is Just a Little Bit Greyer Now
I was a bit surprised when I received a note from an FG surfer this week
that Ace of Space was no longer offering free graphics. Ace of Space
has been around for a while, has some great stuff and I, frankly,
assumed the surfer was mistaken... turns out, I was mistaken. Seems
some unscrupulous cretins have snagged a bunch of artwork from various
free graphics sites and put it all together on a CD call "Web Designer
98"... only one problem with that: they didn't have permission from the
artists.
Cretins making money off the hard and fabulous work of artists who
aren't getting a dime. Not only did the cretins use the work without
permission, they make it appear (on the CD) that anyone can use the
graphics contained therein free of charge, no credit to the artists,
etc. So unsuspecting businesses, personal sites, THINK they are doing
the Right Thing, but are in fact violating copyright.
If you have any details about this CD or want to read more on the topic,
pop by: http://www.aceofspace.com/webdesigner98.html and see how you can
help put a stop to this sort of nonsense.
TOPTENLINKS.COM: Voting Polls Now Open
http://www.toptenlinks.com/
Toptenlinks.com is a fun place to submit your site for listing - why fun?
Because sites are ranked and listed by votes. You know the sites you
find there are going to be good because people just like you vote on
what gets to the top of each category by voting. And you know the
people who come to your site from there are really really looking for
whatever it is you offer... (oh and lawsy no, I just wouldn't mind at
all if you gave FG a little voting boost at:
http://www.toptenlinks.com/computers/graphics.vote ... you know, that
just didn't come across nearly as subtly as I would have liked.)
WEBCARDS (Promotion)
If you're looking for a way to promote your web site offline check out
Webcards - these are nifty postcards (you know, cards you put a stamp on
and send through the post office) made from a screenshot of your web
site (or you can provide other artwork). Send the cards to existing
customers to announce special deals at your web site, send them to
potential customers to remind them what great stuff you offer, or send
them to your family and friends to let them know just how very cool you
have become. Still not sure what a WebCard is? Drop by the WebCard web
site http://www.printing.com/promo.asp?site=freegraph
and order the completely free sample cards.
QUICKTIP
Need Halloween graphics? Look in the Halloween category (
http://www.freegraphics.com/03_Holiday/Halloween/ ), but also search on
"ghost", "witch", etc. Sometimes sites don't have enough holiday
graphics to qualify for a listing in the Holiday section, but I try to
list those graphics in the keyword field (which doesn't display, but is
searchable).
(Want to submit your own QuickTip? QuickTips can be about a particular
graphics software program, about FreeGraphics.com, or about graphics in
general (such as optimization, transparency, etc.) QuickTips are
limited to 50 words or less (yes, I count them, URLs count as one
word). Submit your QuickTip to mailto:webmaster@freegraphics.com with
the subject: QuickTips Suggestion-- if I use it, you'll get a mention
here in the newsletter along with a link to your site -- no adult sites,
please.)

Very nice work here -- conservative enough to work with a
variety of sites, but interesting enough not to just blend into
the background.

Gorgeous backgrounds from subtle to saucy. And the absolute
