WORLD AIDS DAY GRAPHICS
http://www.freegraphics.com/wad.html
World AIDS Day was observed for the first time on December 1,
1988, after a summit of health ministers from around the world
called for a spirit of social tolerance and a greater exchange
of information on HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day, observed annually
on December 1, serves to strengthen the global effort to face
the challenges of the AIDS pandemic, which continues to spread
throughout every region of the world. This organized effort is
designed to encourage public support for programs that prevent
the spread of HIV infection and to provide education and
awareness of issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Since 1981, when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) first began to monitor AIDS cases, more than
600,000 Americans have been diagnosed with AIDS and at least
385,000 have died.
Among those 385,000 are a number of my friends. AIDS
education and awareness is not about numbers, it is about
people.
HIV infections are rising steadily. Current estimates suggest
that between 650,000 and 900,000 Americans are living with HIV
with at least 40,000 people becoming newly infected each year.
As the prevalence of HIV infection continues to expand across
the nation, an increase in prevention efforts to combat this
disease is necessary.
Be a force for change. There's a special download offered this
week of red ribbons and matching sets which you can use to
remind the visitors to your site that AIDS is still with us
and people are still being infected. It's not over.
Among those free graphics, you'll find some poetry, prose,
statistics, and links. Please be sure to read my one request
if you decide to use the poetry/prose at your site (any
questions, just drop me a note at webmaster@freegraphics.com),
but the graphics are free to use -- no link back required, you
may resize them, re-color them, offer them for download at
your site, whatever you like to promote responsible
education/awareness of HIV/AIDS.
Best,
Claire

TEXTPAD
http://www.textpad.com/
If you read last week's edition of the newletter, you know
I've been testing this software. Tested it, getting used to
it, may some day love it, bought it. Most importantly, it
works and means no more hand editing of the newsletter format.
QUICKTIP
In Photoshop, ya love that Swatch menu. But what if you have
a special color (eg, for a corporate logo) that's not in the
Swatch? Make that special color your foreground color, place
your cursor over the grey area at the end of the swatch
(you'll see the paintbucket) and click. Voila!
(Want to submit your own QuickTip? QuickTips can be about a
particular graphics software program, about FreeGraphics.com,
about graphics in general (such as optimization, transparency,
etc.), or about general site production. QuickTips are
limited to 50 words or less (yes, I count them, URLs count as
one word). Submit your QuickTip to
mailto:webmaster@freegraphics.com - if I use it, you'll get a
mention here in the newsletter along with a link to your site
-- no adult sites, please.)

MapMaker
Up until recently, image mapping was handled by the web
server. Usually people used a tool to create the image
map for the web server. Unfortunately, not all of use
have ready access to the web server of our ISP. With
the advent of newer versions of web browsers, we have
the capability to create "Client Side Image Maps".
These maps are contained in web pages that WE create
and contain information regarding the selection
rectangles and the web page (URL) to bring up when we
click the left mouse button within a selection. Setting
up the map by hand is almost an impossible feat, as
relative addressing from the top left of the image is
used. MapMaker32 provides an easy way to create client
side image maps.
Buttonz and Tilez!

includes 2 applications, Buttonz!, which creates
buttons of various shapes, and Tilez!, which renders

image, or using a procedural texture. Various text
effects are included. Additionally, Buttonz! supports
the batch rendering of multiple buttons from the same
template, each having a different caption...Tilez!
textures are created using a procedural approach. You
can choose from 20 basic texture types, all of which
can be modified to suit your needs. Additionaly,
textures can be combined in layers to produce more
complex ones.
